When it comes to clothes and cosmetics, what shades do you label as ‘nude’ ?
When I have asked my friends this in the past, the answer they often gave is peach or pink. And in a way… they aren’t completely wrong ! When you type the word ‘nude’ into the search engine of an online clothing store, the majority of the items that pop up are pale pink or cream.
The dictionary definition of the word ‘nude’ is:
“wearing no clothes; naked”
As I mentioned in the previous blogpost, when I am naked I am not pink… I never have been. I am brown ! A deep bronzed caramel brown and I am content with the skin that I am in. However, I am a member of a racial minority of Caribbean descendants in a European country. And I am aware that I am not within the target market of most large clothing brands. To the majority of Brits with lighter skin tones, ‘nude’ is pink, pale or cream.
For me, brown = nude and I have learnt how to dress to enhance my natural complexion. I advise any cocoa coloured women out there to hunt down some good quality camel/tan/brown pieces. Here is an example of how I style a cinnamon coloured top with a brown skirt and shoes.
I believe in dressing to fit our individual beauty instead of the common ideals that surrounds us !
